Learn Italian This Winter!

After a very successful fall semester at Rec & Ed, I will be teaching two Italian classes next semester: Italian 1 and Italian 2.

These evening, adult classes are fun and help you to learn useful phrases, grammar and vocabulary. I speak as much as possible in Italian and create an immersion environment. We always end the semester with a festa!

Not sure if you should take Italian 1 or Italian 2? The Italian 2 class will be a continuation of last semester’s Italian 1. We completed the present tense and useful vocabulary surrounding greetings, hotels, directions, trains/planes/buses, and eating. We will be reviewing, of course, as we move onto the past tense. If you spoke some Italian at home growing up or have taken a course or two before, Italian 2 is for you. If you’ve never taken Italian before, I recommend that you start with Italian 1.

*If you are interested in learning Italian this winter but can’t make these classes, I am available for private tutoring. I have a very flexible schedule: we can meet in the mornings, afternoons or evenings. I can suggest texts and provide handouts for our private lessons based on your interests, skills and needs. I am happy to work with individuals and small groups.

Countdown: (4) Family History: Ideas for Collecting & Assembling @ UM

While there are only four days left before the wedding (and we fly to New Jersey tomorrow), I’m taking a break from all-things-wedding to present “Family History: Ideas for Collecting & Assembling” at the University of Michigan’s Work/Life Resource Center’s 4th annual event on work/life issues. The title of this year’s conference is Connecting the Dots.

I was contacted by UM’s HR department after someone read the description of a similar class offered at Rec & Ed and one presented at the Ann Arbor Book Festival last May. You never know what opportunities will lead to other ones.

A description of the workshop:

Family History: Ideas for Collecting and Assembling Researching and writing your family history doesn’t have to be a daunting task. In this session, learn tips on how to gather information and brainstorm ideas before translating the stories and research into a form that you can share with family members.

The idea for this workshop, as well as earlier ones and a memoir writing class I taught in NJ a few years ago, came out of a family history project that my mother and I completed together. Continuing the work of her late sister, my mother researched documents about our family’s emigration from southern Italian (Sala Consilina) to northern NJ in the late 1800’s. My mother, a professional photographer, and I visited the town a number of times and collected not only more documents pertaining to the family, but also an oral history. Our relatives there were incredibly generous in sharing their stories.

We paired her photographs with my narrative poems re-telling the family’s history. The result is a manuscript entitled, “Cent’Anni.” The manuscript as a whole is still looking for a publisher, but individual poems have been published. If you are interested, here is one that is available online:

I loved collecting oral history and crafting poems out of those voices and so I decided to begin Word Arrangement, a personalized poem company. And that’s how this blog and venture was born.

Workshop: I am presenting a workshop entitled, “Brainstorming, Work, and Creativity: Thinking Outside of the Box” at the Rochester Writers Conference on Saturday, October 3rd. This all-day conference in Rochester, MI, will focus on not only good writing, but making money with your writing. Isn’t that something we’d all love to do?

Workshop: I am presenting a workshop entitled “Family History: Ideas for Collecting & Assembling” at the University of Michigan’s Work/Life Resource Center’s 4th annual event on work/life issues.  This one-day conference, open to UM staff, will be held on October 6th from 8:00-4:00 at the Four Points Sheraton hotel on Boardwalk in Ann Arbor.

Guest Blogging @ Practicing Writing:Writing Your Family History

 

Writing expert Erika Dreifus kindly invited me to write a guest blog entitled, “Writing Your Family History: Five Hints.”  Erika’s blog Practicing Writer and her newsletter  are incredible resources for writers. When I need some advice, I always turn to her list of resources. I hope you will check it out.

 

My mother, a professional photographer, and I compiled a collection of paired poems and photographs documenting our family’s emigration from southern Italy to New Jersey. These pieces are based on visits to the town where our family originated, oral histories collected with Americans and Italians, historical documents and cultural history about the towns and time periods involved. What we created contains an emotional truth and some facts, but the stories mostly contain facts as we experienced them or as they were told to us. We continue to translate the experiences in the form of our art.

My personalized wedding poem company, Word Arrangement and this blog grew out of these experiences. I enjoyed collecting oral histories and translating them into poems and found a way to continue with this interest. Through wedding poems, I am lucky enough to be able to hear other people’s stories. I particularly enjoy hearing love stories!
